Keep the size right when printing

Choose the matching paper size and print at 100% / actual size. Turn off “fit to page,” automatic cropping and photo enlargement. Ask a photo lab to preserve the full sheet.

Photo requirements & official guidance

Take a color photo within the last six months. Use even light, a plain white or off-white background, a neutral expression, open eyes and a clear view of your face. Remove glasses unless a documented medical exception applies. Do not use filters or change your appearance. Check the issuing authority’s current requirements.

U.S. printed applications: the printed photo is 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with head height from chin to top of head between 1 and 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm). Our face guide is a framing aid, not a measurement or acceptance check.

U.S. online renewal: submit the original, unedited color photo and crop in the renewal portal. The official page lists JPG/JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF and 54 KB–10 MB. Keep your unchanged source file. A generic 600 × 600 edited export is not presented as suitable for online renewal.

For portals requiring an original image, choose the file from Files / Browse. This keeps the exact selected bytes, including HEIC/HEIF even if this device cannot edit them. A photo picker may already have converted the library asset.
